We’re having a birthday for my mother and our oldest daughter today at 1, and I’m volunteering at the Friends of the Library book sale until 12. I was busy most of the day yesterday, so I had to knock some refreshments together on the fly. Fortunately, neither of them like cake all that much. I dug out my late mother-in-law’s recipe for buttermilk pie and made a kind of trifle: Leftover cake from the freezer crumbled in the bottom of a glass bowl, canned peaches in raspberry syrup, syrup and all, French vanilla pudding and packaged whipped topping. Everything fresh would, of course, be better, but this will do.

No writing done today, but it’s early yet.

And no, I haven’t finished my columns….
